VICE PRESIDENT - PHILANTHROPY & MAJOR GIFTS

A major market public media enterprise, serving the Dallas-Fort Worth-Denton Metroplex and an extensive surrounding region, KERA is comprised of three public broadcasting stations—KERA Public Television; KERA FM, the region’s only news and information station affiliated with National Public Radio; as well as the newly launched KXT, an exciting, contemporary adult album alternative public radio station. In addition, KERA last year launched Art&Seek, an initiative that provides television, radio, and web content and is the leading resource in the region for information and programming about the arts. Set in the thriving business community of Dallas, KERA’s long history of service has made it an indispensable institution to its supporters. A convener of ideas and forum for the arts, KERA has also been a leader in membership-based fundraising and is now poised to leverage its prestige to build a sophisticated relationship-driven major giving program of annual five and six-figure gifts.
 
Responsibilities:
 

Reporting to the President/CEO, the Senior Development Officer will work closely with members of the senior management team to build a vision-driven case for institutional support. An intimate understanding of the mission of public media is critical to the success of this individual, and tying the strategic objectives of KERA to donor philanthropy always will be emphasized. He/She has direct responsibility for a portion of KERA’s dollar goal and will work energetically with high-level prospects and donors. The Senior Development Officer will make at least 120 visits, 25 solicitations and close between $2.5 - $5 million in gifts annually. He/She will be responsible for strategically positioning the President/CEO for meetings and solicitations with an exclusive portfolio of top prospects and donors

 

 

  • Prospect Identification - Primarily through face-to-face visits, expands and refines the pool of major donors and begins connecting individuals to mission-related areas based on information gathered.
  • Cultivation - Through visits and pairings with board members, the President/CEO, senior management and content producers, connects prospects closer to KERA’s funding priorities.
  • Solicitation - Arranges and guides every aspect of the asking process, whether the solicitation is done by another or the gift officer him/herself.
  • Stewardship - Manages KERA's response to major gifts received from individuals in assigned his/her portfolio, including acknowledgement and accountability.

    Skills:
     

    The Senior Development Officer must have excellent written and oral communication skills and a documented track record of successfully soliciting and managing current and prospective benefactors at the principal and major gift level. He/She should have outstanding social skills, instincts, and judgment. The ideal candidate will be an ambitious and motivated professional, who values a collaborative working environment and who will be able establish strong, interpersonal relationships with KERA’s leaders. He/She must be able to demonstrate a highly sophisticated understanding of all aspects of the cultivation and solicitation process, whether utilizing staff, senior management, the President/CEO, board members, or making successful solicitations him/herself. A familiarity with and commitment to public broadcasting is essential, along with the polish and enthusiasm necessary to engage with high net-worth individuals on behalf of KERA. Computer literacy and experience working with applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel are preferred. The ideal candidate will be an active listener and viewer of public radio and television and will have the curiosity to continue learning and growing. Maturity and integrity are required for success. Additionally, a pre-employment background investigation will be required.

    Experiences & Education
     

    A minimum of five years of progressively responsible major gift fundraising experience is required. Candidates must be comfortable with a flexible work schedule, including considerable evening and weekend work. CFRE not required but desirable. An undergraduate degree is required.

    BROADCAST ENGINEER

    North Texas Public Broadcasting, Inc. (KERA | KXT), the Dallas/Ft. Worth PBS and NPR affiliate, has an opening for a Broadcast Engineer. This position provides engineering maintenance and support for all television and radio broadcast systems and equipment used by North Texas Public Broadcasting at the following facilities: KERA-DTV, KERA FM, KKXT FM, and TV and FM translator sites. This engineer is a “more advanced" junior or mid-level engineer with strong fundamental knowledge in most broadcast areas and some fine skills in a few (RF or IT). A confidence and strong ability in IT engineering is needed for our industry, and particularly the ability to use existing knowledge and grow in RF skills is desired.
     
    Essential Job Functions
     
  • Provides technical and customer support for all engineering and broadcast related departments within NTPB.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance of HD television & radio broadcast and production equipment (digital and analog) located within all of NTPB’s facilities, including all remote sites.
  • Will be required to fill in on-call duties for vacation relief.
  • Performs routine checks of critical broadcast and transmission equipment to ensure operational performance meets required specified standards.
  • Monitors and corrects or improves the quality of the video/audio/data signals.
  • Actively diagnoses and solves broadcast video, audio and data systems problems.
  • Acts as System Administrator on critical broadcast and related systems.
  • Maintains knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all NTPB broadcast and production systems. Maintains departmental records which include, but are not limited to, Engineering Shift Logs, Engineering Service Request forms, parts and equipment inventories, equipment maintenance & repair histories, etc.
  • Ensures that system and equipment documentation is current and implements processes to continuously review and improve documentation.
  • Specifies, demonstrates and evaluates new television & radio broadcast and production equipment.
  • Proactively communicates the status of broadcast engineering issues to Engineering Management and to all Broadcast Engineering customers.
  • Works as a part of a team to continually develop and improve processes used to support Broadcast Engineering customers.
  • Accepts new assignments and technological challenges as required by an ever changing dynamic broadcasting environment.


    Minimum Requirements
     
  • Minimum of two years technical training and/or a minimum of 4 years experience as a maintenance engineer, with HD television broadcast systems, including analog and digital video and audio systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in troubleshooting and repairing broadcast systems, broadcast transmission equipment and broadcast related computer systems and servers.
  • Be proficient in the use of related test equipment including, but not limited to, waveform monitors, vector scopes, multi-meters, oscilloscopes, test signal generators, spectrum analyzers, data and network analyzers etc..
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer networking systems.
  • Creativity, inventiveness, and ability to "think outside the box."
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work in a multitasking environment.
  • Must be able to lead a team to successful task completion.

    North Texas Public Broadcasting (KERA 90.1) is seeking a student intern to spend the spring and/or summer 2010 semester(s) assisting with the daily production of our radio programs, Think and Anything You Ever Wanted to Know. Think airs Monday - Thursday from noon to 2pm. Anything You Ever Wanted to Know airs Fridays from noon to 1pm. The Think/Anything intern would work 10 to 15 hours a week to assist the production team with various tasks and duties related to production and will report directly to the senior producer. This internship opportunity with KERA is an unpaid opportunity and no compensation will be given. To qualify for an internship with KERA the individual must be currently enrolled full-time as an undergraduate; have completed his/her freshman year; be returning to college or currently be a full-time sophomore, junior or senior, and be carrying a minimum of 12 credits per semester.     RADIO INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY: NEWSROOM INTERN

     

    North Texas Public Broadcasting (KERA) is seeking a student intern to spend the summer assisting the reporting staff as a newsroom intern. The newsroom intern will assist the reporting staff with research, tape gathering and editing, program updates for KERA's website, and other duties as assigned, such as attending press conferences and learning interviewing skills. KERA 90.1 is currently ranked 13th in this market, the 5th largest media market in the country. We reach over 300,000 listeners each week with the most thoughtful, engaging, unique and in-depth news and information programming available on the radio today.

    The intern will report to the news director and will assist reporters and the assistant news director with research for stories or programs. The newsroom intern will also be asked to write news briefs and learn how to use radio equipment in order to assist reporters in the field or studio. The news director will assign the intern to cover press conferences or events. The intern will also assist the newsroom in posting stories on the web.
